Small Bathroom Ideas

The bathroom is for most people the place to think, reflect and rejuvenate. Here are some small bathroom ideas to make your experience one that literally gives you a new lease of life.

  • Use Shelves
There is no reason that the bathroom should look stripped of all furniture. A shelf added to the bathroom is not only utilitarian, keeping the sink clutter free; it also adds a touch of design elegance. No matter how small the space, a tall narrow shelf also lets you place aroma candles and fresh flowers to lend the bathroom a fresh, fragrant feel at all hours.

  • Add Plants

A plant in the bathroom naturally sustains due to the humidity and adds a splash of fresh life and color to it. A money plant, bamboo, aloe vera, boston fern, Chinese evergreen and some table top bonsai trees are ideal. If you're worried about the maintenance you can always purchase silk plants to place in your bathroom to give you the same beauty as a live one without the hassles.

  •  Get funky shower curtains

If you have a shower curtain for whatsoever reason, choose a funky one to give your bathroom a look of sheer decadence.

  • Use Creative Mirrors

Have as many mirrors as you can and make them creative. Besides raising your self esteem to sky high levels, full length mirrors give the bathroom a much needed illusion of space and also help you keep an eye on yourself as you scrub yourself clean. Say goodbye to all traces of dead skin and never miss a spot again!

  • Get fun towels

Nothing jazzes up the bathroom as much as a couple of ultra soft but super fun printed and/or honey combed towels. Let your bathroom experience be soft and luxurious.

  • Keep the sink clean

Minimize bathroom products around the sink keeping it restricted to a good smelling handwash, lotion or moisturizer and a hand towel. Stash away everything either on the shelves we spoke about, drawers or any other storage space you can find.

  • Keep a magazine handy

Whether you are getting ready for the day or for a big party, a magazine in the bathroom with gorgeous centerfolds and spaces is sure to inspire you to be at your best. Soon you will find yourself giving yourself a good face massage or even a quick mani-pedi and will be feeling on the top of the world the entire day.

  • Take music with you

Blue tooth speakers and some even waterproof are extremely pocket friendly on the internet. Purchase one exclusively for your bathroom. Hook it up with music you are in the mood for and step in for a luxurious bath, lighting those candles with fragrant bath essentials.  That is pure relaxation guaranteed to leave you feeling good for hours.

These small bathroom ideas are sure to make you feel beautiful and lively and you’d find that though they are tiny steps, they add to a bigger goal- a happier you!

Blue is the Warmest Color

If you haven’t been touched by the movie of the same name yet, worry not. Because even in reality blue is the warmest color.

When someone says blue in home decor, we think of Greece. Indeed with those iconic blue windows and painted furniture against pristine white walls, the azure sky and the blue seas, it is difficult not to fall in love with that look.

Now bring it home in 5 ways that are standalone, smart, affordable and uplift your surroundings in a jiffy.

First, the obvious: Paint a wall blue

Of course the most obvious way is to select one wall in your house which is at present blank, or can be made to be so and paint it your choice shade of blue. It could either be solid blue or have different shades. You could even texture it using stencils, other material or simply a creative wielding of the brush and roller. Once you are done, stand back and figure out how you’d like it to be. The easiest would be to leave it that way and let it give off the warmth of home and hearth or you could frame your favorite photographs in black, white or canary yellow frames and peg them to the wall. You could create a wall decal of your favorite posters in black and white or colors to give it a different feel altogether.

Second, the short cut: Get blue curtains

The easiest way to turn any room on its head décor wise is to get curtains and other drapes. Here we will stick to only curtains. Blue curtains depending on its color shade can either completely block out the light or create a sheen of sheer romance and beauty giving the room a breezy, light feel. If you are a lover of creativity, you could even get blue light cotton or satin curtains digitally printed with your favorite painting or motifs. A google search can throw up some amazing blue background images. Hang these up and voila! You have transported your room to the romantic age.

Third, the cornerstone: Get blue cushions and throws

Cushions and throws can jazz up a room in all the time that it needs for you to procure one. A simple way to change the way your space looks, go blue and watch the magic unfold around you.

Fourth, the fun way: Paint a few clay pots

A fun Sunday activity, grab a few clay pots, get out your paintbrush and all the blue paint you can find and mix and match to create pattered or solid colored pots in different shades of blue. Let it dry, spray a layer of varnish, let it dry again and on the next weekend either cluster them around or line them up. You can let them be as it is forming accent pieces or go one step further and plant a bougainvillea, geraniums or even throw in a bunch of money plants with adequate water and watch this transform your space to wonderland.

Fifth, create magic: Paintings & Thread-work

If you live in a setting where you really cannot do much to the walls then this is for you. Paint in shades of blue and place them strategically under dim lights to give the feel of warmth and glow. You could even create thread work masterpieces on canvas by creating a sketch, hammering some nails equidistant to each other on its outlines and then weaving yarns of different shades of blue to create a light and shade thread-work art. Now nail it or prop it against a wall and you have created a blue accent space right away.

Blue transforms your home and hearth into a warm, airy, friendly space. Do not let this thought go, look around you and incorporate this purely magical color. Blue is the warmest color.

How to Remove Wall Paper

One of the trickiest things to do in life is to remove wall paper. The reasons behind wanting to remove wall paper could be many. You may want to change it. It may be damaged beyond repair. You maybe want to paint the wall. Or for reasons unknown you may be moving out of the apartment and want to take your wallpaper with you. Whatever the reason may be, here is a handy guide on how to remove wall paper.

These are the basic tools needed to remove wallpaper. Other items may help if available to you such as steamers, scoring tools and some chemical strippers.

Firstly, brace yourself. This is going to be messy, take a lot of time and might make you want to cry buckets.  But if you go step by step to the tune of good music and hopefully in the company of some great friends, it may just get done with relatively less headache.

Now, protect the floor, furniture and all woodwork. Remove everything from the wall and mask the openings with masking tape, normal tape and plastic. Remove all electrical appliances as during the process, water may seep in and damage it as well as increase chances of short circuiting if your plug points are left uncovered.

Start at the corner either near the ceiling or under a switch plate- two areas where the paper is generally loose. Using a putty knife, lift the edges and pull it off the wall steadily. This will peel off the paper and leave the backing on the wall.

Now, take a sponge and soak it in hot water. Wear gloves for this and try to get the water as hot as possible. Soak the now exposed backing. This softens the paste. You could also use a floor mop to do this. This is the point where water and glue will run to the floor and you must have towels and sheets handy to soak it up as quickly as you can.

Keep repeating this process for fifteen minutes so that the backing soaks up the water and the hot water and steam manages to melt the glue and soften the backing. After 15 minutes of this, use the scraper to scrape off the backing. If you do not have a scraper for the purpose, you could use a metal spatula, a putty knife with a rounded corner flexi blade or anything that could double up as a scraper.

Any remaining paste which is difficult to remove would need to be sprayed with gel stripper. You’d get this at the hardware store.  Once this process is completed, wash and wipe the walls thoroughly with sponge and hot water. Repeat the process till all stickiness is gone.

If despite the above process, the wall paper at any stage is refusing to cooperate, it is time to bring out the big guns. Hop off to a hardware store and stock up on and unleash

  • Chemical strippers
  • Scoring Tools
  • Electric steamers

Good luck with the task and remember there is nothing in the World you cannot do and with a little bit of patience and a whole lot of organization, you would have mastered how to remove wall paper!
